Cat’s outta the bag, folks: I’ll be writing and drawing a special one-shot for G.I. Joe starring Duke called G.I. Joe: Silent Missions. My brother Drew (creator of Star Storm at Image Comics) was a HUGE G.I. Joe fan as a kid, so he’s pretty jealous. I’m a bit scared he’ll try to assassinate me and take my place on this thing (pray for me).
I have fond memories of the two of us running off the bus after elementary school let out to watch a block of week-day animation: G.I. Joe, Transformers (my favourite), and Gem and the Holograms, which we’d usually skip, to be honest. We were all about good old late 80’s boys cartoons: military power fantasy served with a metric ton of commercials. Pretty crazy how much guns and soldiers permeated everything we saw as kids in that era. I sometimes worry about all the bullshit my kids will watch in this weird new century, but really was it any different for us?
Anyway, my story is kind of G.I. Joe meets Apocalypse Now (or Heart of Darkness, if you prefer). I love silent comic stories, the challenge of it, and Jim Steranko's work on Nick Fury (which inspired the original silent issue of G.I. Joe. I think. (Right?). That’s what was on my mind when I took on the assignment. My colorist on Kaya, the amazing Jason Wordie, is along for the ride. making things beautiful as always.

My other secret comic I’m working on “Project 38” will be revealed later this year and come out in 2026 from DC Comics.
My main work, KAYA, will remain monthly, or as close to monthly as I can possibly make it without killing myself.
On the bedside table:
-Song Yet Sung by James McBride.
I fell in love with McBride’s more recent book The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store and now I feel like I’m going to run through everything he’s done. One of my favourite things: discovering an established author who already has a long list of work that I can go through. Years ago it was discovering John Steinbeck’s work. More recently it happened when I read Zadie Smith for the first time even though I had heard of her work for quite a while. One of the great joys in life, my friends!
-Dawn Runner by Ram V & Evan Cagle w/ Dave Stewart and Aditya Bidikar
Cagle just draws the shit outta this thing. His manga energy, detail, and motion really make you feel like you’re watching some incredible new anime. Can’t wait to check out Ram and Evan on New Gods. It’s waiting in my pull-list, calling to me as we speak, the siren hum of the Mother Box…
